Active Listening with Marcela Correa (Quito, Ecuador)
improvisation: space, the other, oneself
The practice and learning of movement improvisation gives answers to the new understandings of life as it is felt now. We move to a time that is not fixed or structured, where ideas and concepts change rapidly and are experienced at inexplicable velocities. Fixed choreography does not always provide answers to these experiences, movement improvisation, on the contrary, allows a constant connection with ourselves in the moment, where the present is lived as an experience that is real and filled with meaning.
Workshop: Active improvisation in real time demands a state of complete alertness. In this workshop we will learn to open and amplify this ability at three different, yet interwoven levels:
attending to oneself: improvising in movement requires attending to something real that is felt or perceived through the body. Connecting to these body states and generating movement from them, is what provides meanings to an outside eye. Through the practice of breathing, we access corporeal input to initiate movement.
attending the other: Once inner connection to self is attained, approaching the other and listening to his/her own intentions without leaving the gained personal connection is commanded. Through breathing and connecting exercises we work on this necessary understanding.
attending space: The final component of this workshop is learning to listen to the space in which the performer will act. The space is not just void air but a place where performers design and interact with other bodies designing and interacting. We will concentrate in attending all bodies in space as well as to its active and constant design.
