Community Dance Discussion Jan 26, 2020
Community Dance Discussion Notes, Sunday Jan 26, 2020
Topics:
Meeting Location
-Is there a better place for discussion meetings? What space is available, can it be donated? Is there a public location that will accommodate our group?
-Email list in regards to meeting time, place, and discussion notes.
Discussion Notes
-How do we honor an open transparent discussion and still allow for privacy?
-So far notes on discussions have been emailed to those who were present, then revised should a speaker not want their comments made public. The benefit, is those who are present have the ability to be open, honest, and trust that the space and topics brought up preserve their privacy and their identity, or in some (many) cases projects that are in process. The loss is that some topics may not reach the broader community (those who don’t show up).
Who is the Community?
-Is your community where you work, or where you live? If you’re an artist who lives outside of Central Square, however your work/artistry contributes to the Central Square vibe, is that your community too?
-If the artists leave (or are forced to leave) Central Square, does that geographical community shift?
-Neighborhood.
-Structure.
-Council.
Generational Shifts in the Boston Dance Community
-As far as the middle generation (late 30’s-mid40’s-ish, I hate putting a number on this), how many of us are there? What is our role in the community? Are we experiencing a shift?
-When the 50 and up generation was coming up (sorry for the number), what were their sources? Who were there support systems? What was in place for them?
-How does the middle generation continue to build upon what our mentors put in place?
-Who’s doing it?
-Is there just a lack in PR in regards to the middle generation? Do we just not know?
Local Dance Performance
-What/Who are we going to see dance?
-Are we actively attending dance performance in our own community?
