Community Dance Discussion, Feb 2, 2020

Studio at 550 Posted on February 6, 2020 by Jenifer KelbleFebruary 6, 2020

Community Dance Discussion Sunday, February 2, 2020 Upcoming Performances to Look For -Natalie Johnson Dance, two upcoming performances within the next six months and one more project in process. -Callie, June 20 at Studio at 550 double bill with Violet Nox both studio and rooftop. A Need to Cross Worlds -There are many artists and disciplines with the ability and interest to blend/work with dancers/dance artists. Are we as dance makers aware of the opportunity and interest when it comes to collaborations with other artists? -Is there funding to support interdisciplinary work? -Interdisciplinary residency? Where Are The Full (evening length) Works?             -The current dance climate does not support full works, instead we see many opportunities for companies or makers to come together in a sharing of fifteen minute pieces. While this is a great way to share audience and help expand the audience for other companies/makers, as dance artists … Continue reading →

Community Dance Discussion Jan 26, 2020

Studio at 550 Posted on February 6, 2020 by Jenifer KelbleFebruary 6, 2020

Community Dance Discussion Notes, Sunday Jan 26, 2020 Topics: Meeting Location -Is there a better place for discussion meetings? What space is available, can it be donated? Is there a public location that will accommodate our group? -Email list in regards to meeting time, place, and discussion notes. Discussion Notes -How do we honor an open transparent discussion and still allow for privacy? -So far notes on discussions have been emailed to those who were present, then revised should a speaker not want their comments made public. The benefit, is those who are present have the ability to be open, honest, and trust that the space and topics brought up preserve their privacy and their identity, or in some (many) cases projects that are in process. The loss is that some topics may not reach the broader community (those who don’t show up). Who is the Community? -Is your community … Continue reading →

Studio at 550 Posted on February 6, 2020 by Jenifer KelbleFebruary 6, 2020

Notes from Community Dance Discussion on Jan 19, 2020 Sunday January 19, 2020 Discussion Topics: What is the purpose of our ongoing meetings? -Communication between artists. -Opportunity to hear all voices within the community about what’s happening in the community. A Need for Transparency New Artist Space in Central Square -Can we team up with musicians and recording artists in a new space? -“Peer Space”? Percussion in Dance Class -Counting for live musicians in dance class, understanding counting, or translating counts for live accompaniment. Going through the process of learning how to do this. How much (as dancers) are we counting on our musicians to do the translating? Can we speak their language for a smoother transition during classes. Dance Floors -Are we being honest with our dancers about the floors we’re asking them to dance on? Is there transparency when it comes to this in performance space, class space, … Continue reading →

Aug 22 – 26 Let’s Take Class Week

Studio at 550 Posted on July 25, 2016 by calliechapmanJuly 25, 2016

As some of our favorite places to take class are closed during this time, some of us find ourselves a bit lost before the Fall season starts up.  How are we to get back into the swing of things?  And for those of us who are consistent in our class taking, how are we to continue the rigor and practice if the classes are few and far between?  Fear not!  Studio@550 has an affordable way for both class takers and teachers alike. During the week of Aug. 22 – 26 Studio@550 will offer some tastings of classes that either are ongoing, or are wanting to become.  Come and join us in either capacity. Class Teachers: Propose your class with the form below.  Want to try something new?  Want to find new students for your existing class?  This is a perfect opportunity to do that. Find a time that works for … Continue reading →
