Originally conceived as an iconoclastic rejection of contemporary western dance technique, butoh aims to strip away socially acceptable movements and gestures, and encourages students to find and embrace hidden movements that lie buried beneath years of conditioned behavior. In this weekly, ongoing class we focus on butoh movement methodology, the aim of which is to uncover ‘the natural body.’ Each class begins with a somatics-based warm-up, partnering work to explore skeletal, muscular, and fascial layers of movement and energy exchange, and vigorous floor work. The class will incorporate Classical Spanish Dance and Flamenco techniques and styles. We will work on coordination of playing castanets while dancing; turns and expression of movement. Experiences in playing castanets and Spanish Dance/Flamenco are required. This class will start on 9/10. Director: Yu-Ling Hu Yu-Ling was a company dancer of Ensemble Español Spanish Dance Theater (EESDT) in Chicago from 2007 to 2016. Yu-Ling toured with EESDT and performed nationally and internationally and she studied from several masters including Omayra Amaya, Carmela Greco, Paloma Gomez, Carlos Rodriguez and ect. Yu-Ling is also a board certified dance therapist and her work reaches to people with wide range of physical abilities and cultural diversities. He has been playing the djembe for over forty years- in 1984, after completing a twelve-year apprenticeship, he was deemed a "master" by his teacher, Sega Cisse. Moussa has achieved great recognition throughout Mali as an accomplished musician in theater, traditional ceremonies, as well as the Malian pop scene. Among musicians in Bamako, Moussa is considered to be one of the top djembe players in the country. Since moving to the U.S., Moussa has continued to distinguish himself as a highly respected teacher and performer. He has given drum workshops in cities throughout the U.S. and China. Drum Class Malick Ngom is a talented, masterful drummer who was introduced to it by his grandfather at around the age of 2, and a member of the Sing Song family of griots from Senegal. His role as a griot was to conduct healing ceremonies, folklore storytelling, sharing of Senegalese history, and passing on the culture through the spirit of drumming. While his specialty and strength lies in the use of the Sabar drum, he is as versatile and skillful in the use of the other drums such as Djembe, Djundjun. Malick is also currently a member of two bands, one international Jazz and the other, Afro-Celtic. $15 Thursdays
