The Basics of Ballroom Dancing
In this workshop, we learn the basic steps to some of the most popular styles of ballroom dancing, including Foxtrot, Waltz, Tango, Rumba, Cha Cha, and Swing. Each with its own unique characteristics, these dances are fun, low impact, easy to learn, and can be danced to a wide variety of music. Participants can learn to lead or follow, regardless of gender. No prior experience or partner necessary. All levels of ability are welcome to participate.
Bio
J Michael Winward began dancing at a young age in his backyard. It was here that he forced all the neighbor kids to learn choreography, to be performed in the front yard. He later studied dance and drama at Bennington College (Vermont, USA) , and the Salzburg Experimental Academy of Dance (Austria). It was in Salzburg that Michael began partner dancing, learning traditional Austrian folk dance. Upon returning to the US, he began a career as a professional ballroom dancer with the Fred Astaire Dance Studios. During that time, Michael was awarded numerous regional, national and North American titles, sanctioned by the North American Same-Sex Partner Dance Association. Recent work includes a principal dance role in Disney’s The Finest Hours. He is currently dancing with Peter DiMuro’s Public Displays of Motion, choreographing new work, and operating the Over-55 Ballroom program, which brings ballroom dancing to senior centers and elder care facilities across Greater Boston.
