CONTEMPORARY LABORATORY
with Kristiana Hubley
SATURDAY, August 27 at 12pm – 2pmThe Contemporary Laboratory: a creative space where we, dancers and people, can explore our passion to move. The class will be a series of evocative instructions: vivid images, metaphors, and sensations tasked to scientifically investigate our own individual natural movement. We will dance the whole class. The class will be an intersection of natural movement and contemporary movement styles utilizing terms from Vaganova ballet, Gaga language, and contemporary improvisation. The emphasis of the class will not be on the what, but rather, the how: the quality of movement – whether gliding, aggressive, choppy, bursting, floating. We will use our senses and our creativity. The pursuit of the class will be to dance as a whole entity, never leaving an arm behind or allowing body parts to be dead or disconnected. The class will be as safe or as challenging as the individual needs for that day with ideas that can be explored through micro or macro movement. Just as I am a student and teacher, I invite other dancers and people to share their personal findings. Evoking individual exploration of quality, efficiency, and pleasure of movement, we will gain awareness of how we naturally, automatically move, probe those edges and research beyond.
