Live Drawing

Live Drawing
Drawers and dancers alike are invited to explore the relationship between visual and tactile sensitivity in this weekly laboratory. As both artist and model, each participant will gain a more integrated sense of the interplay between perception and action, between anatomical structure and function.
In traditional figure drawing classes, an emphasis is often placed on “maintaining a sense of the whole”. Can you attend to the entire figure, in other words, rather than allowing your attention to fragment? Can you subordinate the infinitely engaging parts to your overall sense of the form?
In Live Drawing, we will expand this big picture to include the person drawing. We will bring our attention not just to the figure in front of us but to the relationships established between artist and model. Bringing our attention to how we move while we draw, we will become more receptive. Sensing the connection between different parts of ourselves, along with the contact between our bodies, tools and materials, we will begin to see more variety and subtlety in our mark-making.
This Live Drawing series will immerse us, over a two-month period, in a sensory exploration of fundamental principles of movement and sensation in drawing. Alternately drawing and practicing basic actions like rolling, crawling, reaching and breathing, we will develop our capacity to find and maintain a sense of the whole and a sense of relationship in our work.
Skills you can expect to develop in the class:
– Develop the ability to observe and intuit the organizational inclinations of the body
– Nurture your innate sensitivity and capacity for sustained attention
– Hone your insight and talent for seeing through form (as well as over and around form)
– Develop the ability to communicate a sense of dimensionality and weight in drawing and dance
$180 for 8-class series (each class is 1.5 hours)
Payment and registration for the class is required before the class session starts (May 3).
